The Different Types of American Bullies: Pocket, Standard, XL, Extreme, Exotic, XXL
The American Bully breed as we know it nowadays was developed in the mid-1990s to produce the ideal family friend. Years of selective breeding resulted in the creation of the American Bully by combining the desirable qualities of the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier as a base with a spice of other bully dog breeds, primarily bulldogs.
According to ABKC- American bully kennel club, American bully is divided into four classes.
Classes are differentiated by size or type. Only classic is determined by the type, all others by size. When I say size, I mean height at withers because there is no standard norm for weight by class. It should be reasonable for the individual’s build, although. For example, an American Bully typically weighs between 66 and 88 pounds.
The American Bully Kennel Club first recognized the breed in 2004, and the United Kennel Club in 2013.
The American Bully was initially classified into four sizes: Standard, Classic, XL, and Pocket. There are now five varieties of American Bullies, with the Extreme being the most recent addition.
American bully Standard
The typical example of the American Bully breed is a medium-sized dog with a compact, muscular, and bulky physique, a heavy bone structure, and a blocky skull. The height requirement for male dogs is 17 to 20 inches (43 to 51 cm), whereas the height requirement for female dogs is 16 to 19 inches (41 to 48 cm).
Official ABKC guidelines of this sort include some of the following:
A physique that is thick, strong, and compact, with a big chest that conveys significant power without any excessive characteristics;
In spite of the huge size of the skull and the prominent cheek muscles, the head must be proportionate to the rest of the body. prominent jawbones;
Eyes are small and placed widely apart, with an oval or almond shape. Any color is acceptable. However, the pinkish-red (albino) variety is less desired, as is a lack of pigmentation or a blue hue. Both protruding and round eyes are considered flaws.
The muzzle is of a short to medium length and shouldn’t get in the way of breathing. They are muscular with slightly arched and powerful shoulders and a snout whose top line is parallel to the nose. There is a small amount of slack skin that is okay, but mostly the skin is tight.
They come in all colors, white, black, brindle, pied, blue, lilac, tri-colored, and merle pattern.
They are very good for children and families if you socialize them right. American bully is a very energetic breed with a high prey drive which can be used for easy training. They have a high pain tolerance.
Their lifespan is between 10 and 12 years.
American bully Classic
This class of American bully is different from Standard only in type. Classic bullies are the same height as the Standard ones. The only difference is in body shape. They have much less muscle size and look more likely American Staffordshire Terriers. Of course, there are all bully standard markings:
It’s small and looks strong, but it’s not as thick and muscled as the Standard Bully;
Large head and clear jaws. Any color eyes that are oval or almond-shaped. It is not okay for a person to be blue, pale, or albino. Round eyes are acceptable but not desirable. Eyes that are too big are a mistake. The muzzle must let the dog breathe normally. The top of it must be even with the nose;
Strong neck and shoulders, with a slight curve in the neck and little or no loose skin.
With a lighter, less muscular body and a wide chest, this dog still looks even more powerful than American Staffordshire Terrier.
American bully pocket
American bully Pocket is a shorter copy of the Standard one. They share the same head, build, and body type, just on a shortened frame.
Males must be under 17 inches (43 cm) at the withers and no shorter than 14 inches (36 cm). Females should be less than 16 inches (40 cm) at the withers and no shorter than 13 inches (33 cm).
The lifespan of 10-12 years.
American bully XL
This is an enlarged Standard bully. The XL Bully maintains the Standard’s basic body style but is more significant in stature. The XL Bully is heavier than the Standard because it has an enormous bulk. It conforms to the same norms as the Standard variety, and its distinctive qualities shouldn’t be emphasized too much.
This is the largest American bully recognized by ABKC so far. Males must be between 21 inches (51 cm) and 23 inches (57 cm) at the withers, while females must be between 19 inches (48 cm) and 22 inches (54 cm).
Lifespan from 10 to 12 years.
American bully extreme
Extreme American bully is, as his name says it, Extreme. Same standard characteristics and height as the Standard American bully, just exaggerated. Imagine, Standard bully with a height for males from 17 inches to 20 inches (43 cm – 51 cm) at the withers and females from 16 inches to 19 inches (40 cm – 48 cm) at the withers who don’t get out of the gym. Extreme bullies have more oversized body frames (more bone) and higher total body mass (more substance) than the Standard American Bully. Many people mix them with exotic bullies, even calling them exotics.
Exotic bullies are an entirely new category, still not recognized by ABKC but extremely popular these days. As there isn’t a determined standard for exotic bullies, they are usually pocket-size or even smaller. Recently there have been a few subclasses considering their size, micro, and nano. Nano-size exotic bully is under 9-inch height. Micro exotics are from 11-9 inches. The main difference in the shorter muzzle is between 1 and 2 inches long.
Also, these days are popular, even larger bullies than XL. They call them XXL bullies. XXL bullies are more prominent and even more muscular than XLs and may weigh up to 200 pounds. It may also reach a height of 28 inches.
